What is a Yamaha keyboard; which product lines are manufactured; and to which audience do they appeal?
| |
Yamaha KeyboardsThe current Yamaha keyboards can be divided in 5 product lines:• Tyros: High end arranger for professional use • PSR: Arranger for semi-professional and home use • CVP: High end digital pianos • DGX and YPG: Digital pianos The digital pianos can be used as arrangers. They have 88 keys while the arrangers have 61 keys. All models in these product lines share the same technology; which means that accessory files etc. can be used - at least technically - in all product lines. |
TyrosThe Tyros models are the high end arranger keyboards from Yamaha. The 'Tyros' name was introduced in 2002 when the first model - now called Tyros 1 - was introduced. It was followed by Tyros 2 in 2005; Tyros 3 in 2008 and Tyros 4 in 2010. New technologies - e.g. Mega Voices; Super Articulation Voices, SFF2 Style Format - are first introduced in the Tyros models. By the change of top model in the PSR - and other model - range a subset of these technologies are normally added in these models. |
PSRPSR keyboard arrangers have been around for more decades.Until 2002 the high end arranger was called PSR too: 'PSR 9000'. But then the high end arrangers got the 'Tyros' name. The technology in PSR models have been improved during the years; and the top PSR models can now be regarded as "mini Tyros" arrangers. The technology is the same; but there is more of everything - e.g. voices, styles, polyphony and jacks - in the Tyros compared to the top PSR's. | ||
CVPThe CVP Clavinova models are high end digital pianos. These models are equipped with almost the same features as the Tyros models. However, as a major difference the CVP's have an 88-note weighted keyboard; and appeals therefore primarily to piano players. All CVP Clavinovas offer lots of orchestral and synthesizer sounds and lots of accompaniment styles. New technologies - e.g. Mega Voices; Super Articulation Voices, SFF2 Style Format - have been added around the same time as for the Tyros models. |
DGX and YPGThe DGX and YPG models are medium level digital pianos. The major difference between the models is the colour: Silver for DGX and champagne gold for YPG. These models are equipped with fewer features than the CVP line. The DGX and YPG models also have an 88-note semi-weighted keyboard; which appeals primarily to piano players. All DGX and YPG models offer lots of sounds and lots of accompaniment styles; and are somewhat cheaper than the CVP models. |

Use of accessory filesAll keyboard share technology meaning that many accessory files can be used in more models; and even in more model lines. As an example the styles created for a particular model normally can be used in all newer or bigger models. And they can even 'technically' be used in older and/or smaller models too. However, if the older/smaller models have fewer built-in voices some revoicing is necessary. Same as for styles: To some extent pad files, music finder files and voice files are interchangeable. Some 'downgrading' can be performed in the keyboard; and if not there are plenty of software programs available. |
